Rescue cats arrive from Kauai for adoption in the Bay Area

(KRON) -- A special delivery to SFO’s cargo facility Monday as 26 feline friends arrived via jet from Kauai.

“Berkeley Humane has been working with our partners Nine Lives to bring animals that have been affected by the recent hurricanes and storms at the Kauai shelter to the Bay Area to give them a better chance of adoption,” said Jeffrey Zerwekh of the Berkeley Humane Society.

The rescue effort is the second in two weeks.  Last week, another 33 adult cats and kittens arrived from Kauai.

“The reason we're involved in this effort is because often after a disaster, even if the facility is still intact, which they did sustain some damage, there is often a problem where there's a very large population of animals that need care. There are fewer volunteers to help because they're often responding to their own families and their own pets, and there's also fewer adopters because there are fewer people on the island or people available to take animals home,” Zerwekh said.

“So more animals coming in and very few leaving. The best solution to give these animals a chance at a great life is to simply get them off the island,” he added.

The Berkeley Humane Society and Redwood City’s "9 Lives Cat Rescue" each took some of the cats and kittens.   Their next stop, a medical checkup, before they are put up for adoption.

“We both invest heavily in the health of our animals, so you are already adopting an animal that has been spayed or neutered, up to date on all their vaccines, microchip, grazing shots, really ready for their new families,” Zerwekh said.

Adoptions could begin as early as this weekend. If you're interested, check out the web pages of the Berkeley Humane Society or Nine Lives.
