A massive fire tore through a Delaware elementary school early Sunday morning, causing significant damage to classrooms, the library and administrative offices.

Firefighters battled flames for three hours after a fire broke out at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School in Milford on Sunday, according to a statement from the school district.

First responders were alerted to a fire alarm at the school around 4:15 a.m. When crews arrived, several areas along the north end of the school’s Kent Hallway were on fire.

The flames eventually spread into the school’s lobby and front office areas, causing significant damage to the library. Classrooms along both the Kent and New Castle hallways were also heavily damaged.

NBC10 obtain photos from the scene as firefighters worked to put out the flames and smoke:

In the statement the district thanked community members who had already reached out with offers of assistance and expressed confidence that Milford would come together in the aftermath of the fire.

“Thank you to those who have already reached out with support and offers for help…the strength of our Milford Community is second to none, and I know we will have the support needed to get through this together,” the statement said.

The district has not yet provided details about how the fire will affect upcoming classes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
